So after round one Anthony Masters led the way in the Track Chase whilst new Dad Tony McCarthy was holding on at the top of the National Points Championship. Once again we were impressed by the skill of Masters as he cruised around to take both heat wins, not only extending his track title lead but also his chance of the flashing lights were looking more and more certain. Another two superb drives from Benton racking up a fourth and second, he too was certainly going to make the most of his last meeting as a white as he was set to fly up the grading chart once this meeting was complete. Onto the Feature time and our Skeggy Double championship was up for grabs, although Masters looked a strong favourite you couldn’t rule out the reigning Champion Rodgers or the likes of Hawes and Robertson who had all dominated at some point over the weekend. Another fantastic line up for the graded final and a perfect start. Hawes quickly worked his way through the rapid white tops and began to capitalise on a clear track whilst Masters and the elite group were having to carve their way through the pack. It was yet again another flag to flag race and Hawes wasn’t complaining as a stoppage may have hindered his chances of taking the title. Although this was only his second meeting of the year the Kings Lynn race ace was on rails and delighted to take not only the chequered flag but our first title race of the season. A huge congratulations to Derek Hawes our 2008 Skeggy Double Champion, commiserations to Masters on missing out on his first title victory however a cracking runner up result whilst Robertson punched above his weight overpowering both McCarthy and Rubery for the final podium slot.
After coming so close to the title Masters was determined to conclude his weekend on a high and took the final chequered of the day in the Grand National event after Hawes was overpowered after a caution for us to remove a very tangled and wedged 70 rebel from 588 on turn one. After such a successful two day event Masters not only took home five out of eight wins, he clinched the Track Championship plus he should be thrilled to see his name in the elite group for the remainder of May.
Once again another superb drive from Robertson to take the second position in the Grand National event, not a bad weekend at all for Team CMC with his worst result being a fourth place. After such success the 52 racer jumps up the National Points Chart to second and only one measly point separates the top two men—will it all change at Lynn or will the reigning track record holder and Points Champ manage to pull a bit of breathing space? Another brilliant drive from Wilton just getting overpowered by Skeggy supremo Rodgers in the closing stages of the last race but he too should be delighted with his current form and maybe the fin plate has had a coat of paint already! You will all see the new grading list attached with a few major changes for the next three meetings. Well Done to everyone who has moved up the charts—will it slow them down or will they remain a dominant force!!
